The battle of Fort Wagner took place during the United States Civil War. It served an important role as the battle that had African American soldiers playing a significant role. There were actually two battles of Fort Wagner one on July 11, the other on the 18th.

Because the spearhead of the attacking Union forces was a battalion of Black troops, the 54th Massachusetts (coloured), whose men behaved gallantly. To one of them, was later awarded the Medal of Honor, the first to be given to a black soldier
