It was the 14th amendment, section 1:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
The 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to all races (if born in America), due process, as well as equal protection. However, the 13th amendment abolishes slavery, and the 15th gives them the right to vote (only men). The 14th amendment is also used to incorporate other amendments to the states', and give the right to privacy (such as in the Roe v. Wade trial for abortion).

The 14th ammendment ensured equil protection under the law and citizenship for African Americans.
The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects all American citizens from unequal treatment by the law and it solidifies African Americans' citizenship. Part of the Amendment is known as the Equal Protection Clause.

14th amendment
The Fourteenth Amendment, which guaranteed citizenship and equal protection under the law, was designed to protect the rights of newly freed African Americans following the Civil War. Later, other groups, such as Mexican Americans and Asian Americans, cited the Fourteenth Amendment in important court cases to argue for their right to equal protection under the law.
The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution was the first to address citizenship. This amendment defines citizenship. It also contains the Privileges or Immunities Clause, the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause.
