Why were the Articles of confedration created?

A framework for the government was needed, but at the time the fear was that the British crown would be replaced with an American one. Each colony saw itself as an individual place and didn't want to give up it's individual government for a strong central government, so the articles were weak on purpose. Which, in the long run, didn't work well as a form of government.
