Bleeding Kansas is seen by many as a preview of the American Civil War. It involved a series of bloody or violent events that pitted anti-slavery Northerners against pro-slavery Southerners that ended only months before the Civil War started.
In terms of how slavery is conceptualized in the American context, slavery is not important today. But there are many forms of slavery, that do not consist of racial, ethnic or religious aspects. Slavery today is important in maintaining the equilibrium of modern life. Meaning we are all slaves to a system of globalization, if we choose to live in the modern world. Those who do not are vagrants or self sustaining individuals that do not live under the system. If you have a birth certificate, a social security card, a bank account, a cell phone or any other form of partnership, membership or documentation, then you are a slave to the system. In this context, slavery is important in allowing the modern world to function through a series laws, mandates and protocols, effecting your life personally, professionally and socially

The Hartford Convention on 1814 was a series of meetings by Federalists in New England held to discuss the effects of the War of 1812. They especially discussed the removal of the three-fifths compromise as well as the various powers of Congress. In the end, the war was won and the Federalists were generally discredited for their outcries.

Eventually slavery moved out of the social arena and became a point of political contention. Slavery had always been a part of politics, with the constitution devoting three clauses to it, but it had also been ignored in order to keep political peace, and to keep the shaky union united. However, as the nation began to acquire new territory, slavery had to be openly discussed. Pro-slavery South did not want Abolitionist North to have more representation in Congress and vice versa (more land meant more representation in government). Series of compromises were devised, which held the nation together for some time but, the idea of Abolition that started as talk, now became a political agenda. After the Kansas-Nebraska Act opened up new territory to slavery, the republican party came into being, and one of their plans was to stop slavery for good.

Abraham Lincoln, who was relatively new to the national political scene, gained widespread national fame from his series of debates with Stephen Douglas, his opponent in the Illinois Senatorial race. Douglas, a proponent of States Rights, and pro-slavery Democrat, battled Lincoln, an anti-slavery Whig.
