Colonists were a people separate from Britain. For Apex.
I believe this attitude reveals an inferiority complex or envy. The British like to feel superior to others, like the French, other Europeans and especially non-white peoples. Proud of their history and the British Empire, many don't like the idea of being "one-upped" by Americans, however unjustified this idea is. Americans don't speak with a British accent, which is unacceptable to them. After all, the English language is constantly evolving and is not owned by the English. Americans in general will probably always be luckier then the British, as I can't see social conditions in England ever getting better unless it was torn down and rebuilt from scratch.
