the return of american POWs
There is no "North Vietnam" as a country. The term "North Vietnam" was an erronous term used by the US to justify there intervention into Vietnam after the Paris Peace Accord 1954 which temporarily divide the country into 2 parts, North and South. FoIn the history there was no north or south country in Vietnam. The capital of Vietnam is Hanoi.
The United States ended the Vietnam War through a combination of military pressure, diplomatic negotiations, and domestic factors. The Paris Peace Accords in January 1973 marked a formal agreement to cease hostilities and led to the withdrawal of American troops. However, the war continued between North and South Vietnam until the fall of Saigon in April 1975, which ultimately resulted in the reunification of Vietnam under communist control. Domestic opposition and the desire to avoid further casualties played crucial roles in shaping U.S. policy and its eventual exit from the conflict.
In various peace talks throughout history, different U.S. representatives have played key roles. For example, during the Vietnam War, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and North Vietnam's Le Duc Tho negotiated the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. In more recent times, U.S. diplomats such as John Kerry were involved in the Iran nuclear deal negotiations. Each instance reflects the changing diplomatic landscape and the specific context of the conflicts being addressed.
In 1972, North Vietnam finally realized that the war was a stalemate. The two sides met and arranged a cease fire. In January of 1973 the Paris Accords went into effect. The US agreed to withdraw all its troops from Vietnam in 60 days. Congress had stopped funding the war effort. The North Vietnamese government agreed to release all prisoners, which they never did. Free elections were to be held in Vietnam. The President of South Vietnam considered the agreement between North Vietnam and the US as a sell out. But it allowed President Nixon to save face and bring the soldiers home. By 1975, after US troops had been pulled out of South Vietnam, the ARVN (Army of the Republic of South Vietnam) collapsed and the North Vietnamese moved into Saigon, ending the war and finalizing the take over of the South by the North. Our purpose in the war is debated to this day.
