It started on April 12, 1865 because the south wanted to enslave people, but the north knew it was wrong, so they fought for slaves freedom.

WHAT????? No No No No No No! That is wrong! Read your history book. The South Seceded from the Union basically because they wanted to govern themselves and were tired of their Northern "big brother"....so they left the Union. The war began on April 12th, 1861 and ended on April 26th 1865.

The Civil War was not fought to end slavery at all....it was just one of the bonuses! Basically, Lincoln wanted to hit the South where it hurt the most....hence the Emancipation Proclamation. This said that he was declaring that any states who were rebelling against the Union would lose their rights to own slaves....he was giving the South an ultimatum....end the war, and re-join the Union, or lose your slaves. Obviously the South thought they could win....

Once the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the Union began working towards the 13th Amendment, and freeing all slaves. So, although the result of the Civil War ultimately ended slavery, it was never started to end slavery...unfortunately, this is a very common misconception.
