Yes it was the first English settlement in the "New World", It was founded in May 1607, this is when the triangular fort was first completed. 13 years later the Mayflower landed in Plymouth MA founding Massachusetts.
Jamestown was founded later, was settled in a very different sort of location by a group of only men and actually survived.
The crop that helped Jamestown become more successful was tabacco, because they sold it for pipes. Many people enjoyed this sensation, and bought it, which brought in money for the people of Jamestown. ~E VanDe
The one thing that saved Jamestown was tobacco. When John Rolf introduced tobacco to Jamestown he gave them a future. The selling and growing the crop was so popular they grew it every where they could. It was used as money and brought in money.

Jamestown was never a state but Jamestown did have some slaves. So i guess you could call it a slave colonie. but they had very few slaves!!!
