Surrender of Robert E.Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia, the only sizeable Confederate army still in the field, and then the surrender of Joseph E. Johnston. Apart from a few skirmishes in the West, this month marked the end of the Civil War.
The war ended in 1865. Some hostilities continued in remote areas even after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, VA on April 9, 1865 and the surrender of General Joseph Johnston at Bennett Farm, NC, on April 26, 1865. But these constituted the largest number of active Confederate forces.
The two generals who met in Durham, North Carolina, to effectively end the Civil War in that region were General William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union Army and General Joseph E. Johnston of the Confederate Army. Their meeting took place on April 18, 1865, where they negotiated terms of surrender. This meeting followed the fall of Richmond and the surrender of General Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox Court House. The terms agreed upon were later formalized, leading to Johnston's surrender on April 26, 1865.
