It meant freedom from slavery, but not from criticism.

That is soo unbelievably wrong!!!! The Declaration did not free slaves at all!!!! All it was, was the colonies declaring their independence from Britain! Slaves were not freed until the North won the Civil War! The Civil War ended approximatley 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed. According to my highly intelligent history teacher, (whom I just questioned about this matter) the Declaration of Independence did not change Slave's lives what so ever.
