It affected them by money wise. People didn't want strangers just walking into their house saying "Give us some food and some place to sleep tonight"! It took away most of their money, having to feed soldiers.

The Townshend Acts were two laws --a Revenue Act and a Duty Act-- proposed by Charles Townshend, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and put in place by the British government in June 1767. The Revenue Act taxed glass, paper, red and white led, painter's colours and tea; the Duty Act taxed fruit, oil and wine. One purpose of these taxes was to raise revenue that could be used to pay the salaries of officials then paid by the colonial assemblies, making them dependent on the British rather than colonial government, and strengthening British authority over the colonies. The acts also added three new admiralty courts to try Americans charged with smuggling.

Townshend himself died suddenly later that year. Colonists responded to the taxes with the cry "no taxation without representation", with riots and the boycotting of British goods. John Dickinson's twelve "Letters from an American Farmer" helped to galvanize opposition.

By 1770 all the taxes were repealed, except the tea tax, which later contributed to a colonial boycott on tea, culminating in the Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773).

The Colonists protested about the Townshend Act. They did not want to pay the taxes imposed on the goods that they needed, so they dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest. They also held demonstrations and handed out pamphlets that explained their point of view on the subject.

The Townshend Acts angered the colonists because they felt as if Britain was trying to take over the colonies. (If you saw this before, housing and providing for British soldiers was known as the Quartering Act.)
