The "ad" part means Anno Domini which is Latin for "in the year of the lord". It represents the number of years from a point time a monk in the catholic church said was when the birth took place. So 1000 AD means one thousand years from the birth of the lord.

It is more correct today to say CE (Common Era) instead of AD.
