Harvey was the first openly gay politician elected to public office in San Francisco in 1977(took office 1/9/1978). He was the City Supervisor from district 5. That district, although very diverse had a large percentage of gay residents and business owners. He was known as the Mayor of Castro Street and champion various gay rights bills for the city and State. He was assassinated on Nov.27,1978. Although well known in S.F., he became better known when Reporter Randy Shilts wrote the book Harvey Milk, The Mayor of Castro Street in 1982 and used in the Academy Award Documentary movie... The Times of Harvey Milk. However he reached fame from Gus Van Sant's movie "Milk" that won 2 Academy Awards and introduced Harvey and that era in the early S.F. gay rights movement to millions of people, young and old,gay and straight, in America and around the world. I recommend a great web-site that is dedicated to that era with many images of Harvey(including mine) and that era.

visit www.thecastro.net/ it is a collection of actual events by pioneers of that era.
