California had all ready become a territory called the Bear Flag Republic when John C Fremont took the Mexican governor hostage in Monterey. He was taken to Sutters Fort in Sacramento. So many people came into California seeking gold that by 1850 California became a state September 9, 1850.

There were a number of events that increased interest in a route to California. Probably the most important was the acquisition of California in the Mexican-American War, and the immediately following California Gold Rush. The Civil War added urgency to the transcontinental Railroad, and was very important as well.

effect
The California Gold Rush significantly impacted Mexican Americans, often leading to their marginalization and loss of land. As thousands of settlers flooded into California, many Mexican landowners were dispossessed of their properties through legal loopholes and violence. Additionally, Mexican Americans faced discrimination and violence from Anglo settlers, which contributed to social and economic challenges that persisted long after the Gold Rush ended. Despite these hardships, some Mexican Americans adapted by engaging in new economic opportunities, including mining and agriculture.
