The immense size of the unsettled US territory enabled people to move west of the Mississippi River and stake out new farmlands at the expense of Native Tribes. The ever expanding railways helped increase and lower transportation costs. In many areas silver and gold could be mined and enrich miners. The growth of the oil and steel industries fueled factories and railroads. Large waterways and lakes provided for both transportation and to an extent, fisheries. The expanding US population was also a factor.
