African Americans were freed from slavery and one of the goals of Reconstruction was to help them adjust to living as free men. The federal Freedman's bureau was set up to help ex-slaves find food, housing and jobs and provide some education and medical aid.

The reconstruction was somewhat of a failure because it really didnt end slavery, African-Americans were still being treated like a slave and treated really bad, they yet still had to fight for their equal rights. the purpose of the recontrustion was to try to enforce the law and help the African-Americans receive what they deserve; which is their equal rights.

They didnt gain mostly anything, they werent given the respect they derseved.
