There were 3 types of colonies: Royal, Charter, and Proprietary. Charter colonies were given by the king, and some group had the power in that colony. Royal colonies were ruled directly by the king. Proprietary colonies were usually given to a single individual, who could do as he pleased, in terms of ruling that colony.

The charter granted the group the right to settle in the new world (North American continent), and found an English satellite colony there. The settlers landed on Jamestown Island on May 14th, 1607, and founded Jamestown on the banks of the James river, approximately 60 miles from Chesapeake Bay. Jamestown was the first settlement of English citizens, in what is now known as the United States of America.

It was illegal to be a Presbyterian in England. The Puritans were thrown in prison. A group of businessmen bought a charter and the land for Massachusetts Bay from the king. They got the Presbyterian leadership out of prison and they went to Massachusetts Bay. They took a number of their followers with them. You can go to Boston, England, and see the jail that held the Puritan Fathers.
