in 1774 delegates from all 13 colonies met in philidolphia. to discuss the increase in british oppression. The first continental congress declared that colonists should all have the same rights as englishmen. And so they closed down all the ports so there were no trades with the brittains (because of high taxes and for not being treated farley).
