in the 1930s, during the great depression, the dust bowlswept across the great planes, a region that includes Oklahoma. wind would pick up dust and spread it for hundreds of kilometers at a time. the dust could literally bury a home. during this time, farms were plagued with droughts, thousands of jack rabbits, and hundreds of thousands grasshoppers, killing all crops, and leaving many families broke. the dust also caused dust pneumonia, which didn't have a cure, and took the lives of many, though it was very common in children. the worst known dust storm was on April 14, 1935, a day now known as Black Sunday. The drought finally came to an end in 1939, bringing a halt to the dust storms.

In the 1930s, schools in Oklahoma faced significant challenges due to the Great Depression, which impacted funding and resources. Many rural schools operated in one-room buildings, where students of various ages learned together, often with limited supplies. The curriculum focused on basic subjects like reading, writing, and arithmetic, while students also engaged in practical skills like farming and homemaking. Despite these hardships, communities often rallied to support education, emphasizing the importance of schooling during tough economic times.
In the mid 1930s, a major drought in the mid-west caused dust storms, now known as the Dust Bowl, which forced thousands and thousands of people to flee their homes. This was mainly in Oklahoma.
