Furthermore the McCausland's Chambersburg Raid, ordered by Confederate Gen. Jubal Early, that took place on July 28 - August 4, 1864.

This was not an ordinary raid. Early ordered McCausland to place a ransom of $ 100,000 in gold or $ 500,000 in Northern money on the town of Chambersburg as a retaliation for the burning of three houses in Jefferson County -VA carried out by order of the federal military authority.

Ifl the Pennsylvanians refused to pay McCausland had to burn the entire Town.

As the money had been removed from the banks before the arrival of the Confederates, the order was accomplished:

459 buildings were smoldered in ashes, including 278 homes and businesses, 98 farm buildings and 173 outbuildings.
