The freedom of expression and speech are natural and unalienable human rights. They form the central pillars to democracy and its rule of law. The removal of any of these rights would cause the death of democracy.

Would a law restricting the amount of money an individual group can give to a political party or candidate violate freedom of expression?

There are limits for freedom of speech as well as freedom of expression. These limits on freedom of expression are referred to as time, place, and manner restrictions. Therefore a law stating any one individual or organization can only contribute so much would still allow one to contribute but place an amount on it therefore it would not violate the freedom of expression but rather place a focus point on it.

Is freedom of press same as freedom of speech?

No, they aren't the same. Freedom of Speech is allowing you to say whatever you like, and generally what you want to say. Freedom of Press is your right to the media. Anyone (if you had the means) has the right to be on T.V., or to show what you want on T.v.

What does the freedom of religion do?

Freedom of religion is about being able to make decisions about worship. It is being free to choose who, and how, to worship. On a national level, it involves the freedom to establish religious organizations without government control. On a more personal level, it is about being free to interact, grow, and develop spiritually within a religious framework.

They have nothing in common. Christianity is a religious idea while democracy is a form of government. A democracy needs to be secular in nature because it needs to allow for the freedom of religion from all sources.

Should we have democracy?

I think we should but the government needs to do a better job in enforcing it. A democracy is supposed to keep everyone together and allow them to have their freedom at the same time. It's just my opinion but I believe democracy is a good thing as long as it is properly enforced.

Why must a democracy allow freedom of expression?

The American government depends on people to make sound, reasoned judgments when they know all the facts and all the interpretations of those facts. For a government to be free, all people need to be able to express their point of view freely, without fear of prosecution. Free expression gives people the right to have a say, as well as the right to hear what others have to say.

What are problems of freedom of expression?

There are plenty of problems concerning freedom of speech and expression. When someone posts or says something that could lead to violence or hatred and subsequently the violation of someone else's rights it is illegal. Take the racial discrimination act in the UK for instance. Saying that you hate black people on the Internet could lead to some misinformed, already racist, uneducated or easily influenced people to act accordingly against black people. It's not just the political problems with freedom of expression. Freedom of expression also covers pornography. Complete freedom of expression would allow the publication of paedophilia, the abuse of woman and obsenity. Would you want your child to have free access to potentially emotionally scarring images and videos?
