Abraham Lincoln volunteered for the militia in the Black Hawk war. He was elected captain of his company. He never saw combat, but helped bury militia dead after two battles.

Also, Lincoln joined and rejoined the Illinois militaia three times during the Black Hawk War. he did not, however, see any battle action. He spent the last days of his enlistment helping to search for Chief Black Hawk and his warriors.
