The number one cause of the Civil War was clearly slavery however, that answer may be too simple for your teacher. I would also add that the issue of "State Rights" and the issue of "taxes" caused this war.

The American federal government was getting too powerful and taking more and more power away from the states.

The Southern states felt that the people in Washington were bullying them. One example would be the fact that the Southern states were also made to pay over 70% of the money -- in the form of taxes-- to run the federal government.

Although more people lived in the North and it was very industrial-- nevertheless, most of the taxes were placed on Southern industries such as tobacco and cotton.
