A $5 gold coin that was minted in 1899 - aka - Coronet Head Half Eagle - is worth in fine condition (F12): $250; its value increases to $400 if it is in a mint state of MS60.
Oddly enough, I had a 1909 $2 1/2 gold piece appraised a few hour ago today (9/8/08). The appraiser asessed mine as in uncirculated condition, and estimated it at $250. Hope that helps!
You possess a Coronet Head $5 Half Eagle coin - if this coin was minted in 1897 and it is in fine condition (F12), its value is: $250.
With gold prices at $1000/oz most of these coins are worth more for their metal content than as collectibles, about $250 with average wear. The only exception would be if the 1881 coin has a small "CC" mint mark on the back; it's worth about $500 as a collectable coin.
Regardless of mint mark, retail values are in the $200 to $250 range depending on condition and the current price of gold.
