Assuming the coin is circulated. The 1854 Braided Hair Large Cent is a more common date coin of this series. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general, retail values for average circulated coins are $15.00-$30.00, better grade are $40.00-$70.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $95.00-$175.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.
1854 is not a rare date for U.S. large cents.

August 2, 2009 The 1854 Large cent was produced only at the Philadelphia Mint. In circulated condition it has a value from $24 if very worn up to $200 with very little wear. In Uncirculated condition the values are from $250 to as much as $1500 depending upon the actual condition of the coin.
