There are only 3 rare cent varieties from the 1940s. All are error coins and two are so rare that you'll only ever see them in a museum.
The least expensive and most likely to turn up in a collection is a 1944 D with a recut mint mark showing a shadow "S" underneath. These retail for anywhere from about $80 in average condition up to about $550 in MS65.
The other two are super-rare and no new examples have been found in decades - the famous 1943 cents accidentally struck on bronze blanks, and their cousin 1944 cents struck on steel blanks. The former sell for tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars while examples of the latter are all in excess of $100,000.
