From 1909 to 1958 the reverse [tails] side of the cent had the words ONE CENT framed by two stylized wheat ears, which gave rise to the term "wheat cents".

From 1959 to 2008 the reverse carried the image of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.

In 2009 the design was changed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. While the obverse [heads] side of the cent will not change from previous years, except for the date, the reverse had 4 different designs. The first is a log cabin and represents the birth of Lincoln in Kentucky. The second is of Lincoln sitting on a log reading a book and represents his growing up years in Indiana. The third is of Lincoln standing in front of the Illinois State Capitol and represents his professional life in that state. The fourth depicts the Capitol Building under construction in Washington DC and represents the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.

In 2010 a new permanent design was adopted, showing the Union Shield emblem from the Civil War.
