The Chumash people or čʰumaš or sʰamala . They lived from malibu in the south to Moro bay in the north and on some of the Channel Islands. It is estimated that there were 10,000-20,000 people in the precontact era. . The place names of Malibu, Lompoc, Ojai, Pismo Beach, Point Mugu, Port Hueneme, Piru, Lake Castaic, Saticoy, and Simi Valley all come from Chumash words. Chumash people are also enrolled in the Tejon Indian Tribe of California.also, the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation, and the Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians are attempting to gain federal recognition.
