25¢ It's not from North Carolina and it wasn't minted in 1789. Remember, all of the state quarters carry the date that the state being honored was admitted to the Union. The date the coin was minted is next to the bottom rim on the back. The city where is was minted is indicated by a small "D" (Denver) or "P" (Philadelphia) next to the tail of Washington's wig.

North or South Carolina?
No they were not, South Carolina was the first state to join the Confederacy and North Carolina was one of the last. Both states were independent from each other and had their own state governments.
North Carolina got it's name by a pioneer or settler in North Carolina who was named Carolina I think she might have been the first woman settler in North Carolina. But there are other rumors... J14
The first state to secede was South Carolina in December 1860. The last to leave the Union was North Carolina in May 1861.

It is a shame that people who designed the quarter didn't see how misleading it is to place the year 1789 above "First Flight". In fact the Wright brothers had their first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903.
