The "W" is not a mintmark; it stands for Adolph A. Weinman, the designer of the coin. The mintmark (which in 1923 would only be an "S" for San Francisco if it were there - a lack of mintmark implies that the coin was minted in Philadelphia) would be located on the back of the coin, below and to the left of the fasces (the bundle of sticks).
Without a mintmark, the coin is worth about $2.00 to $7.00 in circulated condition, and perhaps $25 to $30 in Uncirculated condition; with an "S" mintmark, it could be up to $75 in Extremely Fine condition (although markedly less in more circulated condition), and perhaps $150 to $250 in Uncirculated condition.
