Wikipedia.com says that no American quarters were minted in 1933. They don't give a reason but further investigation should give you the answer.

ANSWER:The Washington design was supposed to be a commemorative issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the president's birth. However it proved to be very popular, so it was decided to continue minting that design rather than resuming the Standing Liberty design. Demand for coins was very low during the depths of the Depression and many 1932 quarters had been minted, so the Mint held off resuming production until demand was high enough to justify more coins.
