Average value is $3.00-$5.00 for most coins, 1938 was the last year of issue and all were struck at the Denver Mint.
The 1938-D Buffalo Nickel does not seem to have a higher value than other common dates according to the listings I watch. The only increase in value shown is for the D/S and D/D mintmark errors.

Please check your coin again and post a new, separate question with its date. Buffalo* nickels were minted at Denver from 1913 to 1938 so it's not possible to give a specific answer without that information.(*) The coin is called a buffalo nickel or an Indian head nickel, but not "buffalo head" because it shows the entire animal :)
The value of a 1938-D Buffalo nickel varies based on its condition and rarity. In average circulated condition, it typically ranges from about $2 to $5, while uncirculated specimens can be worth significantly more, often exceeding $20 or more. Factors such as mint luster, any unique features, and market demand also influence its overall worth. For an accurate appraisal, it’s best to consult a coin dealer or a current price guide.

This famous design is called either a buffalo nickel or an Indian head nickel; both names are about equally common. Please see the question "What is the value of a 1928 US nickel?" for more information. 1928 is not a rare date for Buffalo nickels. In average circulated condition it's worth about 50 cents. If it has enough details to still clearly see the entire horn on the buffalo, it will be worth $8.00 or more. Check the back, under the FIVE CENTS for a letter "D" or "S". Having one of these mintmarks will make your coin worth more -- especially in the higher grades.
You have to be more specific. Is a D, a D the the number 8 stamped over 7 in 1918 or is it an S? The nickel is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. prices range from a dollar or so to over $30,000 dollars. it shouldn't be gold.
1938 was the last year of issue for the Buffalo Nickel (also called the Indian Head nickel). It was the only year since the coin was first minted in 1913, that only one mint location (Denver) was used. Only 7.02 million were minted in 1938, which makes it somewhat scarce. An unknown number of them show the "D" mint mark stamped over an "S" mint mark. These are more difficult to find and are worth $5 or so even in very worn condition. The value of any coin is based on rarity and condition. A 1938 D Buffalo in especially nice, uncirculated condition can be worth over $250.
