The so-called "mercury" design was used from 1916 to 1945. Your coin is sometimes called a Liberty Head dime but is more often referred to as a Barber dime after its designer, Charles Barber. Please see the Related Question for more.
It would most likely be the 1894-S Barber (Liberty Head) dime with only 24 made. One sold at auction for about $1.9 million.

The "aw' you see is just the monogram of the designer Adolph Weinman, it's on every Mercury head dime. 1942 is a very common year so if the coin shows any wear at all the value is about $2.00 just for the silver.

Only 24 of these are known. Current retail prices range from $75,000 in G-4 condition to about $300,000 in MS-60. If you have one it is almost certainly a counterfeit. BTW, the coin is referred to as a Liberty Head dime or more often a Barber dime. Barber is the name of the coin's designer; the image is of Miss Liberty; it doesn't have Mr. Barber's head depicted on the front.
