What you have is a "war nickel" or "silver nickel". It was produced during WW2 out of a combination of copper (56%), silver (35%) and manganese (9%), and had a big mint mark over Monticello on the reverse of the coin in order to differentiate it from its cupro-nickel predecessors. The S indicates the coin was minted in San Francisco.

The change in composition was to save nickel (a very hard metal) for the war effort.

As of 08/2009 the coin is worth between $0.90 in fairly worn condition to about $4.50 in uncirculated.
