You are correct to be suspicious. Trade dollars were only issued for circulation from 1873 to 1878. The last few decades have seen a huge influx of counterfeit coins, mostly from the Far East. Their quality ranges from excellent to laughably bad. The latter often have impossible dates and designs, as you see on your coin. A couple of years ago I saw a supposed "Washington quarter" that was dated 1865. Another fake, needless to say.

Trade dollars were only minted from 1873 to 1885, and no dollar coins of any kind were minted for circulation from 1804 to 1835. Trade dollars are among the most widely counterfeited dollar-sized coins so if your coin purports to be a trade dollar dated 1817 it's a fake.
Check that coin again. The first trade dollars were minted in 1873.
The Washington Quarter was first minted in 1932.
The US didn't mint any silver dollars for circulation between 1804 and 1835 inclusive. Please check your coin again. It may be a half dollar; if it really does say it's an American one dollar piece you have one of the oceans of counterfeit coins that have come onto the market in the last couple of decades.

Sorry, no US dollar coins dated 1817
The United States never issued a "trade half dollar," although there may be a few local souvenir trade half dollars that have been issued from time to time. US Trade Dollars were issued from 1873 to 1885, British Trade Dollars from 1895 to 1935, and Japanese Trade Dollars from 1875 to 1877.
Low grade circulated examples of this coin have a values of $70.00 to $90.00 for the most common variety of a 1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Foe a better idea of value have a dealer or collector grade the coin.
Please take another look at your coin. It almost certainly will have a picture of James Madison and the dates 1809-1817 or James Monroe and 1817-1825, and the back will have an image of the Statue of Liberty. That means you have a modern Presidential $1 coin. Hundreds of millions of them have been minted, and they have no added value.
There were no dollar coins minted in those years.
No US quarters were minted in 1817.
If you got it from a bank or in pocket change it's just a dollar. This is one of the Presidential Dollar coins that is in circulation today. This coin was minted in 1809-1817. 1809 - 1817 is worth 754,000
