July 15, 2009 These coins are commonly known by 2 names - Indian Head nickels and Buffalo nickels. The 1936 nickel was produced at 3 US Mint facilities, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. It's not considered to be a rare date.
The mintmark can be found on the reverse [tails] side of the coin at the bottom beneath the words "FIVE CENTS". A "D" indicates the coin was minted at Denver. An "S" indicates the coin was minted at San Francisco. If there is no mintmark, that indicates the coin was minted at Philadelphia.
