Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. It may be blank or there may be a CC or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 08/2010:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $240

Moderately worn - $312

Slightly worn - $408

Almost no wear - $984

Uncirculated - $1,910 to $83,130 depending on quality

"CC" mint mark (Carson City):

Very worn - $480

Moderately worn - $1,000

Slightly worn - $1,410

Almost no wear - $6,768

Uncirculated - $20,630 to $200,000

An 1870 "S" mint mark (San Francisco) dollar is one of the key coins in the Liberty Seated series. If you think you have one you'll need to get it certified because values are astronomical:

Very worn - $108,000

Moderately worn - $204,000

Slightly worn - $492,000

Almost no wear - $850,000

Uncirculated - $1,000,000 to $1,231,250
