Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. It may be blank or there may be a CC or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 07/2010:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $1,490

Moderately worn - $1,510

Slightly worn - $1,570

Almost no wear - $1,702

Uncirculated - $1,940 to $35,780 depending on quality

"CC" mint mark (Carson City):

Very worn - $1,530

Moderately worn - $1,780

Slightly worn - $2,060

Almost no wear - $6,538

Uncirculated - $20,480 to $58,500

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $1,490

Moderately worn - $1,510

Slightly worn - $1,570

Almost no wear - $1,708

Uncirculated - $1,970 to $24,980

$20 gold pieces are also frequently known as double eagles and were the highest denomination coins produced for regular circulation.
