why did we have slavery?

While it sounds strange by modern standards, slavery was normal for most of the worst for most of human history. Prehistoric humans had it, as did the earliest civilizations, and all the way up until the Enlightenment period when abolitionism started to take root. In essence we had it because it had always been that way. It existed and the people who wanted to stop it lacked the power to, so it kept existing. The question then becomes, what changed? Now, this is obviously going to be an oversimplified answer, there are whole books and libraries covering the topic, but the short version is: economics and politics. Another facet of the Enlightenment period was the rise of mercantile class in Europe: people who were neither peasants nor gentry. They were collectively wealthy and powerful, and represented a different set of interests than the ruling class of time. To whit: the rising middle class didn't gain anything from slavery, because they weren't rich enough to own slaves, but they did lose out by having to compete against slave-owning gentry. Thus, it was in their interest to get rid of slavery, and as they became the driving force in politics (displacing the gentry), slavery started to be abolished.
