If you cannot afford one you get what they give you, and if you deem the counsel you were given "incompetent" you can appeal your case if you were not acquitted. this is just one of the many rights that they don't have, but there are a lot of rights that can be waved.

An accused is guaranteed ONLY those rights which are enumerated.

Anything else, regardless of WHATEVER it may be, is not guaranteed.
