Betsy accepted the job to manufacture the flag after she was visited by a small committee that included George Washington and George Ross. The committee discussed the need for a new American flag, with the original design intended to have six-pointed stars. However Betsy Ross altered the design to five-pointed stars.
Its a myth. She did sew flags for Naval ships for the State of PA but she was never hired by Congress to design the American Naval Flag. That was done by Francis Hopkinson & his Marine Committee.
