There were more than two, and the defeat was NOT easy. First and foremost, the invaders had sheer numbers. Secondly, they had advanced weaponry. Probably the biggest reason was that the general lack of honor. Their word meant nothing. The Indians were defeated because they did not learn to set aside centuries old differences among the tribes, to join together. Finally, too late, they did band together, and Custer made the mistake of not knowing how many tribes were banded together that day in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He was soundly defeated. A person's word was his bond in the Native culture. He or she would never risk his or her standing in the clan and tribe by lying or breaking a promise. The idea was so foreign to the first inhabitants of this land, that they had no defenses against the white man's treachery. Only until it was too late did they learn not to trust the words of the invaders. It took until 1890, and the Wounded Knee Massacre, to defeat the "free Indians." That took nearly 500 years, hardly an "easy" defeat.
