Female slaves were often exposed to sexual exploitation at the hands of their white masters in 18th and 19th century America. In most cases masters were already married and their illicit relations with slave women led to jealousy on part of their wives who resorted to violence against slave women to vent out their anger. In some cases children born out of such relations also led to continued tensions between wives of masters and slave women. Solomon Northrup is his book '12 years a slave' has recounted such occurrences during his time as a forced slave.
There were three types of arguments: a theological one, claiming that the Bible called Blacks "choppers of wood and carriers of water" (quoted from memory); a pseudo-humanitarian one, that Blacks were incapable of managing for themselves; and a pragmatic one, that the economic well-being of [white] society depended on the free labor of slaves. Altho it may sound unbelievable that people were not ashamed to use the last of these arguments, it is not that different from what I heard on the radio yesterday, someone arguing against the Health Care reform because giving health care to more people would raise his insurance premiums.
The type of workers that were members of the American Federation of Labor were those from the craft unions, with each limited to the skilled workers in a single trade. The union later concentrated on the political protection for the union rather than looking for social change through the legislative action.

Types? Do you mean stages? If you mean stages, its first, second, and third. First stage is early labor, second stage is active labor (the stage where the baby comes out) and third stage is when the placenta is delivered. Then there's false labor, which can seem like early labor but fizzles out before it progresses into anything.
