By 1861, the differing views on slavery significantly contributed to the division between the North and the South. The North largely opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories, viewing it as morally wrong and economically backward. In contrast, the South defended slavery as essential to its agrarian economy and way of life. This fundamental disagreement over slavery's role in society fueled tensions that ultimately led to the Civil War.
Actually, it was the South who declared war on the North when it shelled Ft. Sumner in 1861. For Lincoln it came down to keeping the union together and in the South it was a states right issue. They felt they had the right to determine the issue of slavery. Today the argument is the same, but the issue is abortion instead of slavery.
The Civil War.
The Union was split apart in 1861 primarily due to deep-seated tensions over slavery, states' rights, and economic differences between the North and South. The immediate catalyst was the election of Abraham Lincoln, whose anti-slavery stance alarmed Southern states, leading them to secede. Following South Carolina's secession in December 1860, several other Southern states joined, forming the Confederate States of America. This division ultimately sparked the Civil War as both sides sought to assert their political and social ideologies.
The Civil War was fought between February 9, 1861 through April 9 1865.
