The Tokugawa Bakufu also required that the daimyo maintained a permanent residence in Edo and required that their families live there. Tokugawa Ieyasu also enforced a strict castle building and destruction system. He required daimyo to destroy certain castles in their domains if there were found to be too many. Conversely, when a new castle was being built, he would require daimyo provide materials for it's construction. Needless to say, this was a huge economic strain on them.
