The United States did not have a collective name. It was known colloquially as the "Thirteen Colonies" but the colonies were each considered independent, like mini-countries as opposed to the modern conception of federal states.

The United States of America were briefly called the United Colonies during the War of Independence before the Declaration of Independence was issued in July 1776.

Before that, the British Colonies in North America had no collective name.

The 13 colonies were generally considered as separate, individual colonies except that they represented the southern, non-Canadian portion of "British America."
