The Bay of Pigs invasion was spectacular in its failure. CIA trained Cubans hoped to begin a revolution against the Cuban government. Its total failure revealed the US involvement which was not only an embarrassment of US power, but proved the US wanted to end the Castro regime in Cuba. It was part of the general struggle by the US against global communism, which helped to create the Cold War hostility between the US and the USSR and their various allies and satellite nations, setting the stage for the more serious Cuban Missile Crisis which was to follow.
