The Northern reaction to secession was marked by shock and a sense of betrayal, as many Northerners believed the Union was indivisible. The secession of Southern states, starting with South Carolina in December 1860, prompted calls for military action to preserve the Union. Many in the North rallied around the notion of defending the nation, leading to increased enlistment in the military and a determination to confront the secessionist states. Overall, it solidified a sense of Northern identity and commitment to the Union cause.

Established a naval blockade around the Southern states
The North had an organized navy, which allowed them to make a blockade around the southern coast lines. Ships coming in with supplies for the Confederate Army, could not pass the blockade. Southern ships carrying merchandise could not get their goods to foreign merchants.
The Union blockade of major Southern ports was a method to cut off trade between the Confederacy and foreign countries. The South used torpedoes, fortifications around certain ports and privateers to circumvent Union warships blockading ports. It also had a small war fleet to attack Union ships.
Britain set up the blockade.
They beasted it.
During the American Civil War, the goal of the Union naval blockade of Southern ports was intended to starve the South of key material resources and war-making supplies. The Confederacy sought to get around the blockade by sending "blockade-runners" through the Union pickets at night or in rough weather or at other propitious times. They also attempted (unsuccessfully, on the whole) to reorganize their industry as more self-sufficient.
