Where do the Blackfeet Indians live?

The Blackfoot Indians live in the Northwest corner of Montana now. The Blackfeet held most of the immense territory stretching almost from North Saskatchewan river, Canada, to the southern head-streams of the Missouri River in Montana, and from about longitude 105° to the base of the Rocky mountains. A century earlier, or about 1790, they were found occupying the upper and middle South Saskatchewan, with the Atsina Indians on the lower course of the same stream, both tribes being apparently in slow migration toward the north west.

How did the Blackfoot Indian tribe get its name?

There are two unconnected North American groups that have been called Blackfoot or Blackfeet -The Blackfoot division of the Teton Lakota (Sioux) in north western South DakotaThe Blackfoot confederacy of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northern Montana, made up of the Blood, Piegan and Blackfoot tribesHistorically the tribes of the Blackfoot confederacy often painted their shirts, leggings and moccasin tops black or dark brown and many surviving items demonstrate this feature. In Plains sign language this group of tribes is indicated by making the signs for "moccasin" and "black".Alternatively, it may refer to the old practice of setting fire to grassland in order to encourage new growth, thereby attracting buffalo herds to the fresh grass; walking through the ashes would give moccasin tops a black appearance. It is possible that the "black painted moccasins" theory is true of the Blackfoot confederacy, while the "black moccasins from walking through burnt grass" is true of the Teton Lakota Blackfoot.

What part of north America did the Blackfoot Indians live in?

There were (and are) two completely different tribal groups in North America who have been called Blackfoot or Blackfeet; they have no connection with each other. The Blackfoot Sioux (sihasapa) are a branch of the Teton Lakotas, living in the north-west part of South Dakota between the Sans Arc and the Minneconjou. They spoke the Lakota dialect of Sioux. Today they are mainly found on the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River reservations in South Dakota. The Blackfoot tribes (siksikakwan) of Montana, Saskatchewan and Alberta formed a strong coalition which included the Piegan, Blood and Blackfoot proper - these are all Algonquian speakers; they had allies in the Sarcis and Gros Ventres, making them the most powerful force on the far northern Plains.Links below take you to images of Blackfoot Lakota and Blackfoot warriors:

Did black foot Indians grow anything?

There are two unrelated tribes today called Blackfoot - the Siha sapa are the small Blackfoot sub-tribe of the Lakota Sioux, living in South Dakota; the Siksika are a very large Algonquian group located in northern Montana, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Both of these unconnected groups were historically Plains nomads who grew no crops of any kind; both gathered wild plants, fruits and roots to supplement their predominantly meat diet.

When did the black feet Indians live?

There are two unconnected and unrelated groups of people in North America who have been given the name "Blackfoot" or "Blackfeet". One tribe is a part of the Sioux people, who call themselves siha sapa; the other (much larger group) is the Blackfoot people of Montana, Alberta and Saskatchewan who call themselves siksikakwan. The languages, beliefs and social structures of these two groups are totally different. The Blackfoot Sioux were not a separate tribe at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition, but had become so by about 1825. They still exist today on the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota. The Blackfoot group of the far northern Plains have a much older history; long before the first European explorers encountered them they were the most westerly of the Algonquian-speaking tribes. Since at least 1750 the three tribes that make up the group have been known by distinct names: Piegan, Blood and Blackfoot (collectively called Blackfoot). These three tribes still exist today, but their prehistoric origins are lost in the mists of time.
