American Civil War:

Feelings were very mixed at the start of the war, as the war pit brother against brother. The South feared that with the newly elected Lincoln that they would loose their way of life, ie lose of slaves and many states rights. Thus the south declared independence. Lincoln never even admitted that the south had succeeded, instead he implied that they were simply, "a few rebellious states" that needed to be brought back into the Union. Views tear in different directions, some fighting for the freedom of the enslaved black man, and others fighting for States rights against the federal government. It was one of the darkest chapters in American history, but resulted in the freedom of thousands of slaves and the re-unification of the Union. After victory the North choose to help rebuild the South instead of sanctioning them. Though some Southerners wanted to fight on with gorilla warfare (ie assassination of Lincoln), General Lee and many other Confederates were tired of War and gave into the progressive change of the North. Reconstruction lasted many decades, and even to this day people have mixed feelings about this time period.
